A sacred pause on the road to the Lassithi Plateau
As you leave the north coast of Crete and begin the gentle ascent towards the Lassithi Plateau, the landscape slowly changes. Olive groves give way to higher ground, the air becomes cooler, and the journey feels increasingly timeless. Just before reaching the plateau, hidden among trees and hills, lies one of the island’s most important religious monuments: the Monastery of Kera Virgin Mary.
This is not a place you rush through. It invites stillness.
A monastery shaped by centuries
The Monastery of Kera is believed to date back to the Byzantine period, with its roots reaching as early as the 13th century. Over the centuries, it played a vital role as a spiritual centre for the wider region of Lassithi, especially during times of Venetian and later Ottoman rule.
Like many Cretan monasteries, Kera was not only a place of worship but also a refuge. It endured periods of destruction, abandonment, and rebuilding, standing as a quiet witness to the island’s turbulent history. Today, its stone walls and simple architecture reflect resilience rather than grandeur, making its presence even more powerful.
A landmark of faith and pilgrimage
The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has long been a place of pilgrimage for locals, particularly on major religious feast days. Its location, slightly removed from villages and towns, reinforces its spiritual character. Visitors often describe a sense of calm the moment they step inside the courtyard, a feeling that contrasts beautifully with the winding mountain road outside.

The hagiography and the chained icon
One of the monastery’s most significant treasures is its hagiography. Inside the church, visitors can admire well-preserved Byzantine frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, as well as saints revered in Orthodox tradition. These paintings are valued not only for their religious meaning but also for their artistic quality, offering insight into Byzantine iconography in Crete.
Particularly striking is the revered icon of the Virgin Mary, traditionally known as Panagia Kardiotissa. According to local tradition, this icon was believed to be miraculous and repeatedly returned to the monastery after being removed. To prevent it from leaving again, it was symbolically secured with a chain, which remains associated with the icon to this day. The chain has become a powerful symbol of devotion, protection, and the deep bond between faith and place.
